Georgia Resilient Agriculture, Irrigation and Land Project - ESMP for Narekvavi Irrigation Scheme
Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA) is implementing the Georgia Resilient Agriculture, Irrigation, and Land (GRAIL) Project, co-financed by the World Bank and the Government of Georgia. A Project Implementation Unit (PIU) under MEPA undertakes day-to-day management of the Project, including, among other functions, procurement, contract management, and environmental and social risk management. The rehabilitation and modernization of the Narekvavi Irrigation Scheme (NIS), located in Dusheti Municipality of Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region, is included in the Project’s scope as one of several subprojects. Rehabilitation works will be carried out by a construction company (“Contractor”) hired by PIU (“Employer”). PIU will undertake technical supervision of works, including environmental and social oversight, through a hired firm (“Engineer”).
Planned rehabilitation works include rehabilitation of the existing headworks, replacement of damaged intake and sluice gates, cleaning and rehabilitation of the main canal, and reconstruction or replacement of damaged hydraulic structures such as the aqueduct, siphon, culverts, footbridges, and turnouts/outlets to restore reliable operation of the irrigation system.
Based on the approved design and current site conditions of the Narekvavi Canal, the works will be implemented entirely within the existing canal alignment, right-of-way, and/or State-owned land plots. All operations will take place from the left bank of the canal, and the contractor is obliged to avoid disturbance of the right bank properties.
