David Songulashvili: “In the wine industry, access to innovation and the adoption of new technologies are essential, in which the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) plays a particularly important role”
During his official visit to Italy, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr. David Songulashvili, participated in the session of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) conference “Recognizing the Value of Global Vine and Wine Culture: International Perspectives.”According to the Minister, access to innovation, the adoption of new technologies, and the role of international institutions are essential for the development of the wine industry.
“The international recognition of the cultural value of wine means acknowledging one another’s histories, pasts, and traditions, each of which is distinctive, authentic, and unique to every country. Moreover, wine is a language of communication, and I believe this is precisely the key to understanding its cultural value on the global stage. Wine creates a space where people freely exchange ideas and share emotions. Therefore, when we speak about the cultural value of wine internationally, we must recognize its vital function in connecting people, events, and bringing them together,” stated the Minister.
Mr. Songulashvili also highlighted the significance of international platforms and organizations, including the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) and UNESCO, in enhancing and advancing the global wine industry.
“I would take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the significant support and the work carried out by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) and UNESCO for the global wine industry. The traditional Georgian method of winemaking in Qvevri has already been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage; however, equal attention could be given to ‘Marani’ (traditional wine cellar), ‘Supra’ (traditional feast), and ‘Rtveli’ (grape harvest), which are crucial components for promoting Georgian wine and holding strong potential for wine tourism,” noted the Minister.
