Peach and Nectarine Harvest Season in Kakheti Enters Active Phase
Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. David Songulashvili, visited the village of Gurjaani to observe the ongoing nectarine harvest in the orchard of local farmer Nikoloz Getiashvili.
Nikoloz Getiashvili has developed his farm with the financial support of the Rural Development Agency. Through the “Plant the Future” program, he received approximately GEL 20,000 in co-financing, while his preferential agrocredit exceeds GEL 240,000. The farmer currently owns 28 hectares of peach, nectarine, apricot, and plum orchards and expects to harvest around 250 tons of fruit this year.
The Minister discussed production-related needs directly with the farmer. It was noted that government support for orchard establishment, as well as the development of cold storage and processing infrastructure, has significantly increased production, directly contributing to higher incomes for the local population.
Notably, under the “Plant the Future” program, the establishment of new peach and nectarine orchards has been financed across more than 300 hectares nationwide. The total investment exceeds GEL 4.3 million, with the Rural Development Agency contributing GEL 1.7 million in co-financing.
The Deputy Minister, Mr. Kakha Kakabadze, State Representative in the Kakheti Region, Mr. Giorgi Aladashvili, Head of the National Food Agency, Mr. Zurab Chekurashvili, and representatives of the local government, accompanied the Minister.
